Combine the Monarch Wildlife Cruise around spectacular Taiaroa Head with a guided land tour of Penguin Place.
Embark on your cruise from Wellers Rock Wharf. See what can't be seen from land!
– unrivalled viewing of several species of albatross, fur seals, other marine mammals and up to 20 species of ocean birds.
Listen as our crew give a full commentary about the wildlife, history and geology as the boat explores
the stunningly beautiful and rugged coastline close to the entrance of the Otago Harbour.
Don't be put off by the cold & windy days, the local wildlife love it - we often see more activity in a cool southerly wind!
Then make your way up to Penguin Place (3 minutes drive from the wharf)
Enjoy a guided walking tour around the Yellow Eyed Penguin Reserve – home to the worlds rarest penguin.
The 90 minute tour begins with a short talk outlining the issues these special penguins are facing, their lifecycle and what
conservation efforts are being made to protect and ensure the survival of the species. A short bus trip over working farmland
takes small groups to the reserve, your guide will lead you on foot through a unique system of covered trenches and into
viewing hides. These hides allow access to living areas and breeding grounds of this shy penguin, providing the opportunity to
witness and photograph undisturbed activity at a close range.
